How to choose a sail line
Sail lines are usually used on yachts that go under sail. Lines or sheets that are used for sails are very strong and made from durable quality material. Most often these lines are used as sheets for controling sails, but in fact the scope of their application is very wide.
Lines for yachts, have different properties, due to heavy loads, the requirements for such ropes are very different. Depending on where the cable is applied, this can also change the requirements and characteristics of the line.
Sheets and halyard lines
Line for managing the sails sre called – a sheet and a halyard line. The basic requirements for such lines are durability, and also a line should not be stretched, be very strong. Most often in this case are used lines made of high-strength polyester.
Docking and anchor lines
Ropes and lines that are used to anchor or dock a boat are called mooring lines or docking lines. For this case, the rope must be elastic, very strong, and must also absorb all energy.
Previously, steel cables were used, but modern synthetic materials completely superseded them. Indeed, thanks to modern technologies, the property of new lines: durability, safety, elasticity, softness, make these ropes very popular among yacht lovers.
Lines for controling sails are called sheets
When choosing this line, you need to consider that it is soft, flexible, yet durable, to have maximum flexibility. The yachtsmen put forward the highest demands to the sheets.
Boat line is very often name for all lines and ropes, which are used on a boat. Previously, these lines were used only from natural materials, now in the age of technology, usually these lines are made from synthetic composition. The main property and achievement in the synthetic composition was that such ropes practically do not absorb moisture.
The most common lines used for controling a sail:
- Reef lines
The presented lines are united into one large group, which is called the running rigging. Such a cable on a yacht is much easier to replace. But to find the right line, let’s talk about what kind of fiber are used.
Types of fibers for running rigging
- Most often are used polyamide fibers, they makes possible to produce strong lines that have cushioning properties, and also such ropes reduce the dynamic load if they are used for anchoring.
- Polypropylene fibers in ropes enable them to have buoyancy properties.
- Polyester fibers are most often used for yacht sheets. Due to their properties, namely the absorption of ultraviolet rays, they have minimal extensibility, and also a very affordable price.
- Modified polyethylene has become possible to use due to modern technology. These ropes are very smooth, sliding. Most often they are produced in special braids, so that they are easy to attach.
